With this new release of Advanced Design System (ADS) 2017, Keysight builds upon its industry leading RF/MW circuit simulation software platform with improvements in customer experience (3D Viewer, Quickstart Guide, Python Data Link) and performance (circuit and FEM simulation speed, handling complex layouts, multi-technology support). This together with many other new features help to make the life easier for those who do both RF Front-end module and RFIC silicon design.3D Layout Viewing, Routing, and EditingThe increased complexity of today’s wireless communications designs demands improved solutions for viewing and editing. This complexity is no match against the new 3D design capabilities in ADS 2017. With these 3D capabilities, it is now possible to visualize and edit a PCB or MMIC/RFIC layout in three dimensions (Figure 1). This provides designers a powerful tool for verifying that designs meet requirements, while also helping them find detrimental mistakes. ADS 2017’s new 3D capabilities also greatly simplify stitching with vias in a multi-layered design, routing in dense areas, and making complex structure selections while preparing for EM simulation.Figure 1. 3D editable views of a) an RFIC layout for an LNA, and b) a PA module PCB now available in ADS 2017.Multi-Technology 3D Electrothermal SimulationDesigning intricate modern power amplifier (PA) modules requiring high-density layouts or employing advanced semiconductor processes (e.g., GaN and GaAs) can be a tricky proposition. To avoid costly circuit revisions, designers must take a deep look at the thermal performance of the circuit prior to its tape out.For many years, the ADS Electro-Thermal simulator has provided designers with a full 3D thermal solver that is tightly integrated with the ADS layout environment and circuit simulators. It computes the full system or chip temperature profile, and annotates this information in the circuit simulator for temperature-accurate circuit analysis. ADS 2017 takes these capabilities one step further by allowing multi-technologies to be thermally simulated together.As an example, consider a PA design that is flip-chipped and encapsulated in a Quad Flat No-Leads (QFN) package. The design includes the die, laminate, copper bumps, and packaging, creating a highly variable thermal resistance profile that is naturally quite difficult to analyze. Figure 2 summarizes the multi-technology substrate setup inside ADS 2017. Figure 3 shows the thermal effects of the building blocks of the entire 3D chip with excellent resolution and accuracy. Included in the thermal analysis are all the design’s structures. With this information, designers can make any necessary edits and subsequently, tape out with a high degree of confidence.Figure 2. The interface uses undocumented features of ADS! Therefore, there is a chance that it will stop working under a new release of ADS. The current version of the interface has been tested with ADS 2016.1, 2017, 2019 and 2022.NOTE also that the interface has been used for simulations using Harmonic balance solver in ADS. It should work with other solvers as well, but it is not guaranteed.FeaturesThis ADS-MATLAB interface allows:Set paths and environmental variables required by ADS;Change parameters in the ADS project's schematic ("Var Eqn" component);Change parameters of components (like SNP, capacitors, etc.);Run simulation;Read results from the dataset files generated by the solver (which can be run either from Matlab using this interface, or natively from ADS IDE).NOTE that all parameter changes made by the interface affect only the project's netlist file, and do not affect the schematic. PathWave Advanced Design System (ADS) 2021 Update 1.0 Datalink is an add-on that enables engineers to process simulation data in the Data Display environment using customizable Python scripts. Datalink consists of a set of ADS and Python functions which, when paired together, enable automatic data transfer and script execution. The scripts are invoked using a standard Data Display equation object or a schematic based MeasEqn object, and data can be passed through this equation as well. Datalink includes a full, standalone Python 3 install which is used to execute the scripts. Adding Python to Data Display enables advanced functionality such as instrument connectivity, 3D plotting, and contour generation. Several example applications and customizable scripts are included as part of the install and the example workspaces, Datalink_Basics_wrk and Plot_Various_Meas_LP_Data_Using_Datalink_wrk. It is not necessary for the user to know how to code in Python to take advantage of these capabilities. FAA AD 2017-11-11, regarding NavWorx ADS-B units, goes into effect July 11, 2017.As promised a few months ago, the FAA has now finally issued an airworthiness directive regarding certain NavWorx ADS-B units, which requires removing, disabling or modifying the unit. The FAA says the AD was prompted by what they see as an unsafe condition, where design changes resulted in the units in question broadcasting a Source Integrity Level (SIL) of 3 instead of its authorized SIL of 0. This could result in the possibility of the “unit communicating unreliable position information to Air Traffic Control and nearby aircraft and a subsequent aircraft collision.”Last October, after publishing an NPRM (Notice of Proposed Rulemaking), the FAA received nearly 200 comments from both individuals and groups, including NavWorx, the Airplane Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA), Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA), and the Aircraft Electronics Association (AEA). With the issuance of the AD, the FAA took the time to respond, at length, to all the comments. Featuring silicon RFIC interoperability with Cadence’s Virtuoso, GoldenGate-in-ADS, and a host of capabilities intended to increase design efficiency, the Keysight EEsof EDA software, ADS 2015, is changing how silicon RFIC and multi-technology module design is performed. With this new release of Advanced Design System (ADS) 2017, Keysight builds upon its industry leading RF/MW circuit simulation software platform with improvements in customer experience (3D Viewer, Quickstart Guide, Python Data Link) and performance (circuit and FEM simulation speed, handling complex layouts, multi-technology support). This together with many other new features help to make the life easier for those who do both RF Front-end module and RFIC silicon design.3D Layout Viewing, Routing, and EditingThe increased complexity of today’s wireless communications designs demands improved solutions for viewing and editing. This complexity is no match against the new 3D design capabilities in ADS 2017. With these 3D capabilities, it is now possible to visualize and edit a PCB or MMIC/RFIC layout in three dimensions (Figure 1). This provides designers a powerful tool for verifying that designs meet requirements, while also helping them find detrimental mistakes. To avoid costly circuit revisions, designers must take a deep look at the thermal performance of the circuit prior to its tape out.For many years, the ADS Electro-Thermal simulator has provided designers with a full 3D thermal solver that is tightly integrated with the ADS layout environment and circuit simulators. It computes the full system or chip temperature profile, and annotates this information in the circuit simulator for temperature-accurate circuit analysis. ADS 2017 takes these capabilities one step further by allowing multi-technologies to be thermally simulated together.As an example, consider a PA design that is flip-chipped and encapsulated in a Quad Flat No-Leads (QFN) package. The design includes the die, laminate, copper bumps, and packaging, creating a highly variable thermal resistance profile that is naturally quite difficult to analyze. Figure 2 summarizes the multi-technology substrate setup inside ADS 2017. Figure 3 shows the thermal effects of the building blocks of the entire 3D chip with excellent resolution and accuracy. Included in the thermal analysis are all the design’s structures. With this information, designers can make any necessary edits and subsequently, tape out with a high degree of confidence.Figure 2. Keysight Advanced Design System (ADS) to Matlab interface.IntroductionThis TADSInterface class allows for communication with Keysight Advanced Design System (ADS) from within MATLAB.It has been developed and tested under Windows platform, but small modifications are expected to adapt it for Linux.Warning! The interface uses undocumented features of ADS! Therefore, there is a chance that it will stop working under a new release of ADS. The current version of the interface has been tested with ADS 2016.1, 2017, 2019 and 2022.NOTE also that the interface has been used for simulations using Harmonic balance solver in ADS. It should work with other solvers as well, but it is not guaranteed.FeaturesThis ADS-MATLAB interface allows:Set paths and environmental variables required by ADS;Change parameters in the ADS project's schematic ("Var Eqn" component);Change parameters of components (like SNP, capacitors, etc.);Run simulation;Read results from the dataset files generated by the solver (which can be run either from Matlab using this interface, or natively from ADS IDE).NOTE that all parameter changes made by the interface affect only the project's netlist file, and do not affect the schematic. The netlist will be re-generated by ADS if simulation is started within its IDE. So, the parameter changes here make sense only if the simulation is started by means of this interface.Demos / DocumentationAll functionalities are well documented in the included Live Script demos. FAA AD 2017-11-11, regarding NavWorx ADS-B units, goes into effect July 11, 2017.As promised a few months ago, the FAA has now finally issued an airworthiness directive regarding certain NavWorx ADS-B units, which requires removing, disabling or modifying the unit. The FAA says the AD was prompted by what they see as an unsafe condition, where design changes resulted in the units in question broadcasting a Source Integrity Level (SIL) of 3 instead of its authorized SIL of 0. This could result in the possibility of the “unit communicating unreliable position information to Air Traffic Control and nearby aircraft and a subsequent aircraft collision.”Last October, after publishing an NPRM (Notice of Proposed Rulemaking), the FAA received nearly 200 comments from both individuals and groups, including NavWorx, the Airplane Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA), Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA), and the Aircraft Electronics Association (AEA). With the issuance of the AD, the FAA took the time to respond, at length, to all the comments.
