Article Engineering, Geological Time-domain acceleration-based pulse characterization of 2023 Kahramanmaraş earthquakes Sedef Kocakaplan Sezgin, Ehsan Ahmadi, Mohammad M. Kashani Summary: Two major earthquakes occurred in the Kahramanmaraş region of Türkiye on February 6, 2023, causing casualties and infrastructure damage. The authors characterized the pulse components of the earthquake ground motions using a multi-pulse decomposition method and found that the pulse cumulative energy of the ground motions near the rupture line was more significant for the Pazarcık earthquake, while it was not significant in a specific area and uniformly distributed for the Elbistan earthquake. The dominant pulse periods of both earthquakes were mainly in the range of 0.5-1.5 seconds, and the pulse amplitudes of several ground motions of the Pazarcık earthquake exceeded 0.5g, while all amplitudes of the Elbistan earthquake were below 0.5g. BULLETIN OF EARTHQUAKE ENGINEERING (2024) Article Engineering, Geological Analysis of earthquake-induced pounding between adjacent buildings in a row Shan Jiang, Changhai Zhai, Fuwei Zhang, Ning Ning, Jigang Zhang Summary: This study aims to address the complexity of the law of collision reactions between adjacent buildings. A mathematical model is established using the dimensional analysis method, and the effects of structural layout, oscillator parameters, etc. are considered. The results show that it is dangerous to place a structure with small mass and stiffness outside, while the bilateral impact response leads to a smaller displacement of the middle structure. Earthquake was a 9.5 magnitude and occurred in Chile on May 22, 1960.It is not usually the earthquake itself that claims lives, but the destruction of man-made structures or other natural disasters caused by the earthquake, ie. tsunamis or landslides. On average, there are 500,000 detectable earthquakes that occur each year. Of those, 100,000 can be felt and 100 cause damage.Earthquakes below a 3.0 on the Moment magnitude scale are largely imperceptible. The featured timeline is made using Timeline Maker Professional. Can be used to guide seismic design, etc. BULLETIN OF EARTHQUAKE ENGINEERING (2024) Article Engineering, Geological Axial-shear-flexure interactive behavior and completed shear strength model of reinforced concrete members considering steel-bond slip J. H. Wang, Y. P. Sun Summary: This study fabricated 20 high-strength fly ash concrete beams for testing. The results showed that the degradation of the shear strength carried by the concrete controlled the overall shear strength behavior, and the Vc of the beams with a shear span ratio greater than 1.5 eventually reduced to zero. A calculation method for predicting the ASFI behavior and an analytical model for calculating the nominal shear strength were proposed, which showed good agreement with the experimental results. A new model for describing the degradation of shear strength was also proposed. Comparisons between the predicted and experimental results demonstrated that the ASFI calculation program and shear strength model could accurately predict the lateral behavior, shear failure, and post-failure behavior. Of components under long-period ground motions Jiawei Zhang, Bo Wang, Yang Liu, Fei Cheng, Zhipeng Wang, Huijuan Dai Summary: This study analyzed the elastic-plastic displacement response of structures under long-period ground motions, including far-field long-period ground motions and near-fault pulse-like ground motions, and the influence of the post-yield stiffness ratio. By calculating the elastic-plastic displacement response of single degree of freedom systems, the effects of ground motion type, post-yield stiffness ratio, natural period, and strength reduction coefficient on normalized elastic-plastic displacement were studied. The results showed that the normalized maximum displacement decreased with the increase of period, the increase of post-yield stiffness ratio, and the decrease of strength reduction coefficient, but the variation degree of the normalized maximum displacement was different under different ground motions. The normalized residual displacement was the largest under NPGM, and the variation of normalized residual displacement with post-yield stiffness ratio, strength reduction coefficient, and natural period was different under different ground motions. In addition, the post-yield stiffness ratio of components was significantly affected by design parameters and loading paths.
