Keyboards and mice stopped working with Windows 8.1, can't log in Thread starter Thread starter harpsm Start date Start date Aug 23, 2014 You are using an out of date browser. It may not display this or other websites correctly. You should upgrade or use an alternative browser. Status Not open for further replies. #1 I bought a refurb Acer desktop with Win 8.1 a week ago. It's gone through a few rounds of big Windows update installations and after restarting the most recent time, my keyboard and mouse do not work. Both light up initially when the computer is started up, but the lights go out within a few seconds. I verified that the keyboard and mouse work on another computer. Basically, the computer appears to boot up normally, but I can't click or type anything, so I'm completely stuck at the date and time screen. I've seen others with similar problems talk about booting into safe mode, but I don't think I can do that without a working mouse and keyboard. Any advice? Darkbreeze Aug 23, 2014 So what you need to do is begin hitting F8 as soon as you power on the computer and keep doing so until the repair screen appears with safe mode and repair options. Just because the mouse and keyboard don't work IN windows, doesn't mean they won't work prior to windows loading drivers. If you can get to the safe mode screen then boot via safemode. Once in windows, if the mouse and keyboard are working, go into control panel and then open device manager. If there are any devices that are showing a problem, it will already be open to that device if there is one, right click the device and select update drivers and update automatically. I use two different computers, each with a different operating system, to do my stuff. Actually, I use five, but only two where I would ideally like to switch between them while I’m using them. I’ve experimented with some solutions, so I can offer some advice. The first bit of advice is this: Maybe don’t do this. If you have multiple monitors on one or both of the two computers you would like to share, then you are probably taking up a lot of desk space. More to the point, the two dimensional, but really, one dimensional, range over which your monitors are spread is probably so wide that you can’t really use two computers with one keyboard and mouse without have some sort of super chair, a very long neck, and an extension build onto your arm. Maybe what you really need is two desks near each other with a computer on each one.The USB fix. But, maybe you still want to do this, to use two computers with one keyboard.I want to do this in part because the only keyboards I really like are large and tend to cost close to $150, such as a full size Tactile Keyboard for a Mac, the Avant Stellar keyboard (which is very hard to find these days), or a cheaper Linux friendly Mechanical Feel Gaming Keyboard, such as this one which is on sale dirt cheap at the moment though I’ve not used this exact one so I’m not sure if it is any good. I like the big tactile keyboard sitting there with my favorite mouse, and I just want to sometimes use one computer, sometimes the other computer. I’m willing to shift the keyboard and mouse one way or the other by a foot or so on my desk, and I don’t change back and forth on the fly, just going to one computer for an extended period, then switching to the other computer for an extended period. For this, you want a USB switcher such as the UGREEN USB Switch Selector. I use this one. You plug a USB mouse and a USB keyboard into it, and then run one USB cable to each of your two computers. There is a button you press to switch computers. If you read the reviews you’ll see people complaining that the switch is not instantaneous. It isn’t, but for this particular use case it need not be. It is pretty fast. There are four USB inputs, so you can put more devices on the switch beyond just the keyboard and mouse, and if you do, that may slow down the switching more. Point is, this works fine for changing which computer you have keyed up, as it were, and it is not an expensive or difficult to implement alternative. The Synergy Fix: Attempt one unhappyThere are multiple software solutions that allow two computers to use one mouse and keyboard by having one computer be the “server” and the other the “client,” so as your mouse moves. Have you ever wanted your computer mouse to be more than just a mouse? If so, Asus has devised an innovative solution just for you -- and it smells good, too. Asus has officially announced the Fragrance Mouse, a new ergonomic mouse with a built-in fragrance compartment on its underside that comes with a refillable aromatic oil vial. It was first shown off at CES 2025, but it will now officially make its way to the market in the US soon. The Asus Fragrance Mouse will be available in two color finishes: iridescent white or rose clay. The refillable aromatic oil vial can be washed and refilled with any scent, so you can customize it depending on what you want to smell. Asus has not yet revealed the price and launch date of the mouse, but reportedly it's coming "around late April, early May." Asus says the mouse has a gently curved thumb rest on the right side, so you can comfortably hold it. The feet on the mouse are made from PTFE material, which allows it to glide smoothly on any flat surface. The mouse has dual-mode connectivity, meaning you can connect it wirelessly to your computer via Bluetooth or a 2.4Ghz wireless USB dongle. It has adjustable DPI settings of 1200, 1600, and 2400dpi. A single AA battery powers the mouse. Durability shouldn’t be an issue, as Asus says the mouse has been "engineered to last with 10-million-click-lifespan switches."If you already have an aromatic oil diffuser at home, this mouse may be the perfect companion for it.
