(Image credit: KVR Audio)We're big fans of KVR Audio here at MusicRadar. Since before this website even existed, they've been busy tirelessly building an online community for music-makers and audio nerds to discover, discuss and explore software, plugins and all things music tech - and to buy it too. As a result, we were excited to see that they'd released an annual end-of-year round-up of the year's best-selling audio software, spotlighting the most frequently purchased products in the KVR Marketplace. They've described it as "an eclectic mix which includes a few surprises", and we'd be inclined to agree, as the list features a few somewhat unexpected best-sellers that we've not come across in any other EOY round-ups. Coming in at the top spot is The Orchestra Essentials from Best Service. While we've previously been wowed by their enchanting Forest Kingdom sample library (which we described as no less than a "meticulously-crafted, leafy kingdom of aural amazement") we haven't had the chance to experiment with their orchestral libraries just yet. Judging by its prime spot on this list, though, The Orchestra Essentials is a worthy purchase for anyone after rich, colourful and realistic orchestral sounds to play in Kontakt. Place number two was taken by the pleasingly retro 80s Spaces, from developers Nomad Factory. This unique processor seeks to capture the nostalgia-laden reverb sounds used by iconic artists of music's golden era: Michael Jackson, Duran Duran, Tears for Fears, David Bowie, Depeche Mode, George Michael and more. We're told that definitively '80s gated reverbs, sweeping tails, chorused verbs and lush, cavernous spaces are all but a click away. When it's not delighting in '80s nostalgia, the music tech world is often preoccupied with the fresh, the new, and the cutting-edge. There's often very little room for anything in-between those two polarities - plugins that may be a few years old, but are still worth their salt. That's why we were pleasantly surprised to see AIR Music's Xpand!2 coming in at number three on KVR's list, a virtual instrument and ROMpler from way back in 2014 that first saw the light as a bundled plugin with the Pro Tools DAW, but has since transformed into an eminently capable musical tool in its own right. We're told it's packed full of a versatile array of highly playable sounds that can be layered to produce multi-timbral tones and evolving soundscapes. Following Xpand!2 in fourth place is the venerable DiscoDSP OB-Xd, a synth we've recently explored in our series of free synth tutorials. This powerful Oberheim emulator is based on the iconic OB-X, and it's one of the most affordable virtual analogue instruments out there, owing to the fact that it's actually offered up for free: DiscoDSP only ask that you part with a modest $49 if you're using the software for commercial purposes.Want all the hottest music and gear news, reviews, deals, features and more, direct to your inbox? Expansive ambiances. If you're unfamiliar with the different types of delay, it can be worth looking into to make the most of their features and effects. 2. Protoverb Protoverb is an experimental room type reverb plugin that is unique in its methods. Instead of avoiding natural room resonances, it collects as many as possible. This results in realistic reverb sounds and effects that you won't see in other plugins. Experiment away, and you may just strike gold with particular parameter combinations. The developers U-HE call this plugin "researchware" as they actively encourage the user community to send in their favorite (or strangest) sounds. As it's still a prototype at the time of writing, it's free, and it's definitely worth a try. 3. RO–GOLD RO-GOLD is one of the best free plate reverbs available. It emulates the classic EMT 140 plate reverb hardware that was a feature in music in the 50s and 60s, and builds upon the classic model by using a 24k gold plate. This reverb can bring a lush tone and subtle polish to your audio. If you're unsure of the differences between plate reverbs and room reverbs, you may want to brush up on the characteristics of the different types of reverbs. 4. OrilRiver KVR Audio""> Image Credit: KVR Audio The clear and easy-to-use interface of OrilRiver is a feature that makes it great for contexts where you want to quickly apply reverb. It centers upon diverse room reverbs, and its sonic qualities are a principal reason. Join KVR Audio. Create an Account . You just have to get around the driver problems that M-Audio refuses to fix. e.g. You must specify another driver as the default Sound Playback device in the Windows Settings. there are other problems as well - see the M-Audio forum threads. Lemmy Koopa Lemmy Koopa KVRist Topic Starter 101 posts since 13 May, 2011 When I had my Line6 as the default audio device I've had problems too. I have a VST that allows me to ASIO out to a device but it's pretty buggy, so I just use Reaper's I/O hardware capabilities that work great for streaming via Virtual Audio Cable.Thank you for the post. Lemmy Koopa Lemmy Koopa KVRist Topic Starter 101 posts since 13 May, 2011 Hi, I just got my Fast Track Pro today and using the driver it comes with is great, but when I use ASIO4ALL I keep getting buffer pauses every 20 seconds or so. Is there anyway I can fix that without having to up the latency to an unbearable amount? Lemmy Koopa Lemmy Koopa KVRist Topic Starter 101 posts since 13 May, 2011 Ok, so I set Virtual Audio Cable to use Hardware Buffer instead, and the M-Audio's buffer size can now be down to 160 without buffer stops, unless I'm running other programs, then I have to up it a little bit. Good so far.Comments
