Jun 28, 2017 As a musician, I am usually over critical of music. That being said. I am also over critical with genre identification. Especially when it comes to musicals and operas. So what constitutes and opera and what constitutes a musical, or even an operetta? I want to say that I mainly sing classical music, but I still enjoy so many other types of music than just what we consider classical.Opera:synonyms:grand opera, light opera, musical, musical comedy, opéra bouffe, operettaa genre of classical music.a building for the performance of opera.a dramatic work in one or more acts, set to music for singers and instrumentalists. A Dramatic work? Couldn't that be identified as a musical too? Also, singers and instrumentalists also participate in musicals? So, what's the difference? According to an opera singer, it can be the complicity and lack of speaking, but not all operas have a recitative. Some do have speaking - more modern operas, and Operettas. There is also a certain staging and story line that you must have in an opera and another in a musical. The Phantom of the Opera is NOT an Opera. Musicals:synonyms:tuneful, melodic, melodious, harmonious, sweet-sounding, sweet, mellifluous, euphonious, euphonic"musical poetryya play or movie in which singing and dancing play an essential part. Musicals developed from light opera in the early 20th century.Developed from an opera... This is true. Now, musicals are not bad but the classification of them can be different. To most, though, a musical has beautiful music, but also the speaking parts are prominent. This seems to have more of a prominence - the differentiation of the speaking and singing. A cool thing about musicals is that they may be derived from operas, or the same story operas came from like Rent coming from La Boheme. Both are awesome, by the way. Operetta: a short opera, usually on a light or humorous theme and typically having spoken dialogue. Notable composers of operettas include Offenbach, Johann Strauss, Lehár, and Gilbert and Sullivan. This one is difficult to explain because operettas are performed in both the musical

That he wouldn’t allow the murder of a woman on ‘his’ stage.”The opera Carmen premiered at the Opйra Comique on March 3, 1875. Georges Bizet, the opera's composer, passed away on June 3, 1875 – exactly 3 months later. Some historians have said that his death was precipitated by his disappointment with the opera’s reception by the audience and critics. Perhaps!Carmen the OperaHow did Carmen the Opera Become So-o-o-o Famous?Perhaps,Carmen the opera has become so famous because of a successfully orchestrated, albeit not deliberate, series of promotional factors. In 1915, Carmen a silent film was produced in Hollywood. Although the film’s original promotional materials claim it is based on Mérimée’s novella, it is actually the exact same story as in Carmen, the opera. In 1943, Carmen Jones, a Broadway musical with music by Georges Bizet and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II, was staged. It takes place during World War II with a cast of African-Americans. Most of Bizet’s music is unchanged in the musical. However, Hammerstein adapted it to the nuance of Broadway performers, who were not black opera singers. In 1949, Carmen was made into a full length ballet by “Les Ballets de Paris”. The music is from the opera by Georges Bizet, adapted and orchestrated for the ballet. In 1954, Carmen Jones, the Broadway musical, was adapted into a film. Once again, it featured an African American black cast. So, Carmen the opera, adapted into musicals, ballets and films, has created a noise.Famous Carmen the Opera, Film, Musical, BalletBut, perhaps the most curious contributor to the success of Carmen the opera is it’s children’s chorus. Many children’s choirs in cities around the world have participated in full scale productions produced by major opera companies in their city. For example, Yaryna Kudla, Myron Yusypovych’s niece did so with the Canadian Opera Company in Toronto, Canada. Why I Love Opera!!Yaryna KudlaAs a member of the Canadian Children’s Opera Company, I have found opera to be very inspiring. We have many opportunities to work with professional opera singers. We can follow their example and maybe someday become a great star! It is a great honour just to have the chance to set foot on an opera stage. The feeling is magical and the music flows into your body!Another reason why I love opera is the costumes and props are so fantastic. When you slip into your costume, you become a different person, the person that you're playing on that grand, wonderful stage. The costumes are specially fitted for you and the people that create them are the nicest people I've ever met, apart from my mom, of course! The props and costumes take you back in time and you have a sense of what it must have been like to live in different times.Singing opera is a very thrilling experience – the music is beautiful, you learn different languages, become more confident and maybe even find your way to becoming a professional opera singer! All you need is a good voice, dedication, hard work and a good memory!. Learn about the myths and legends that inspired the classic musical. The Phantom of the Opera is there, inside your... history book? He could be, or at least inside a book of legends. The story of a masked, disfigured Paris Opera House dweller who puts an ingenue under his musical spell sounds like the stuff of myths. But stories of a chandelier crash and a ghost at the opera house in Paris circulated long before The Phantom of the Opera, now set to close in February 2023, became the longest-running Broadway show and third-longest-running West End show in history.Compoer Andrew Lloyd Webber based the show on a 1910 novel of the same name by Gaston Leroux. And he based his novel on multiple spooky events in the Palais Garnier, the opera house where the Phantom book and musical are set. Some of the stories of people, places, and events that inspired The Phantom of the Opera are true. Others are probably not, but they're fun legends that Leroux immortalized and Webber later made famous with his iconic score. While no one knows exactly how true these stories are, here's how they inspired Leroux to create the tale that haunts and thrills audiences over a century later, and how Webber made them his own.Experience these tales now before The Phantom of the Opera closes on Broadway.Get The Phantom of the Opera tickets now.Is The Phantom of the Opera based on a true story?Yes and no — the plot of The Phantom of the Opera is fictional, but parts are inspired by true stories and legends. While everything in the musical did not actually happen, many elements of the show (and the novel it's based on) are taken from real stories of what happened at a Paris opera house. For example, there was actually a devastating chandelier accident, and there are many rumors of a ghostly presence haunting the theatre.Read more below to find out what true (and ghost) stories inspired the record-breaking show, and see them on stage before The Phantom of the Opera closes. The chandelier crash in Phantom was inspired by a true event. The Act 1 finale, during which a one-ton chandelier comes crashing down onto the stage, is one of the most iconic moments in The Phantom of the Opera musical. It's thrilling to watch live, and it was inspired by a real tragedy at the Palais Garnier. Contrary to popular belief, though, it wasn't actually the chandelier that fell. On May 20, 1896, a performance of the opera Helle was underway when a counterweight, one of multiple which held the chandelier up, broke loose and fell through the ceiling. One person was killed, and several others were injured.
