Getting Started The Simply Fortran Integrated Development Environment (IDE) is designed to be simple for new users to understand. Simply Fortran operates using a project-centric paradigm. All development is driven by the user’s project. The following sections describe how to quickly build a simple Fortran executable from an empty project. Creating a New Project When Simply Fortran initially starts, the user will be presented with the Start tab. This view offers a quick route to getting started, including empty projects, some sample project types, and a list of any recent projects opened with Simply Fortran. If a new project is selected via this page, Simply Fortran will ask for a location to save the project file, then close the dialog, presenting the user with the Simply Fortran interface. Adding a File To get started with compiling Fortran code, at least one file must first be added to the project. If an example project was selected as a new project, a file may already be present in the project. To add your own existing Fortran source code, select Add File(s)… in the Project menu. Using the file selection dialog, the user can select an existing file. After selecting Ok, the new file should appear in the Project panel. On Windows, the above procedure can be used to add a previously nonexistant file. To add a completely new file, select Add File(s)… in the Project menu, navigate to an appropriate directory using the file selection dialog, and type the name of the new file into the file selection dialog. Generating the Makefile If a project has been saved, the user can explicitly generate a makefile for a project via the Generate Makefile command in the Build menu . Alternatively, the makefile generation procedure will be performed whenever the user executes any of the other build procedures , as these other procedures rely on the existence of a makefile. Internal Procedure When the makefile is being generated, Simply Fortran scans all project files to determine the interdependencies of any Fortran 90 (or higher) files. Because Fortran files containing modules relied on by other files must be compiled first, Simply Fortran generates a makefile that explicitly requires necessary modules and their source files to be compiled first. Additionally, Simply Fortran also scans Fortran files for INCLUDE statements. The include statement pulls the contents of another file into the file containing the INCLUDE statement. If an included file is part of the current project, it is added as a dependency to the file containing the INCLUDE statement. If the included file is not explicitly contained in the project, the file is not marked as a dependency for the originating source file. This procedure allows changes in included project files to properly trigger rebuilding source files which INCLUDE the changed file, but it avoids unnecessarily complicating the build process with static extra-project file dependencies. Using the Makefile Outside of Simply Fortran The generated makefile can be used outside of the Simply Fortran environment to build projects as well. The user should note, however, that Simply Fortran use Open Watcom Make for building projects, and the generated makefile uses some Open Watcom Make-specific tokens and workflow. To construct a project with a makefile externally, the make command is: wmake all If the user wishes to employ GNU Make, a more commonly found utility, an export option should be used instead. Automatic Makefile Generation By default, makefiles are only generated when they do not yet exist or the user explicitly commands their generation. New builds of Simply Fortran 3.34 are now available on the Download page that fix some issues found in the initial release. Per a user report, the Compile and Run Current File function in the Build menu now properly detects the use of Aplot and, on Windows, AppGraphics, linking those libraries when necessary. Editor panels containing exceptionally large Fortran source files should no longer have intermittent freezes when moving in a file after a change, though some syntax-based coloring issues may appear. On Windows, Simply Fortran's outer window border should be drawn correctly on Windows 10 and 11. The shutdown of Simply Fortran now includes a timeout on Windows to handle cases where background worker threads fail to cleanly exit, avoiding the possibility of headless, zombie instances of Simply Fortran continuing to run after the program is exited.On macOS and Linux, crashing when the theme is changed and a Build Status tab is open has been fixed. The Git popup menu accessible from the status bar once again works. Window layout that could cause scrollbars in editor panels to remain hidden when Simply Fortran is resized is corrected. Project Management Projects in Simply Fortran are normally a collection of Fortran source files and, optionally, additional libraries and dependent projects that are compiled and linked into a single executable or library. Most projects are manipulated via the Project Outlien Panel within Simply Fortran. Projects are loaded and saved to special .prj files which contain all this information. Creating New Projects New projects can be created by selecting New Project from the Project menu. This option is also available via the pop-up menu in the Project Outline Panel. Adding and Removing Files Source files, object files, and compiled libraries are added and removed to a project via the Project Outline Panel. The panel supports adding user-defined folders for organization that do not necessarily have to correspond to file system folders. Please consult the Project Outline Panel page for further information. Project Options The type of project, the name of the final build target, and the build directories can be configured via the Project Options window. Simply Fortran supports the creation of executables, static libraries, and shared libraries. The resulting output of the build process can be arbitrarily renamed by the user. Saving and Loading Projects can be saved via the Save Project and Save Project As… entries in the Project menu or within the pop-up menu in the Project Panel . Simply Fortran project files are recommended to be located in the top-most directory of a project tree. The locations of all files within a project are stored relative to the location of the project file. All project options are also stored. Loading projects can be achieved using the Open Project… option in the Project menu or the equivalent in the Project Panel’s popup menu.
