Cloned a few times since its release, Crazy Taxi was a thrill that could not be found anywhere else. The music from The Offspring got a little tiresome after a while, but actually got you in the Crazy mood.Crazy Taxi gives you control of a cabby racing around two San Francisco-esque cities, picking up customers and dropping them at their required destinations by any means necessary. It’s a race against the clock, resulting in no-holds-barred racing around the two cities, flying off hills and screeching around bends. Although some may argue that the game lacks some depth, they forget that this is a pure arcade game that compels you to beat your best scores. The Dreamcast version also featured the “Crazy Box”, a set of minigames that features challenges such as stopping by hitting a pole, bowling using the cab as a ball, and popping giant balloons in a field. Not only are these challenges a fun change of pace, but it also helps you polish the skills necessary to improve your scores on the main game. There are ports of Crazy Taxi on newer consoles, but they aren’t improved in any way. The Dreamcast is still the prime console to get your Crazy fix and is incredibly affordable.Full Review of Crazy TaxiFull Review of Crazy Taxi 2Find Crazy Taxi Series: (eBay / Amazon)Soul CaliburAny fighting fan knows that the Soul Calibur series is one of the best franchises in the genre. It has traditionally been relatively deep for a 3D fighter and sports a wide variety of characters. However, with both Soul Calibur 2 and 3, your average game may wonder why they should bother with this 7-year-old game. You would think that the newer installments running on much more powerful hardware would be far superior, but that isn’t necessarily the case.Sure, the newer installments have a few more character customization options and some enhanced game modes, but the original Soul Calibur holds up incredibly well in terms of gameplay depth and graphical quality. It’s funny how some iconic characters can wind up in the strangest places.Ever since the 90s, fighting games have always been a home to some of the craziest guest characters. While they’re normally used to cross-promote two different franchises to their respective fans, you can’t deny that there’s something hype and intriguing about seeing a foreign character dropped into a different universe. On that note, some fighting games really have some bizarre pulls when it comes to guests. Barring crossover games like the Versus series or Smash Brothers, we’ve got five fighting game guest characters that really stand out from the pack.Rambo – Mortal Kombat 11The modern Mortal Kombat series is unique in that it consistently has big movie or TV icons as guests. Perks of being owned by Warner Brothers to be sure and the developers have always taken great care of how they represent these icons. Rambo letting out his battle howl. Makes you wonder how he’s able to hold that gun straight with just one hand. (Image from Reddit)Mortal Kombat 9 and 10 had horror icons while 11 focused on 80’s action movie stars for their guests. We got the Terminator, RoboCop, and John Rambo himself in all their 80s action movie glory. Rambo is a funny stand-out when you take in consideration the ultra brutal fantasy setting of Mortal Kombat. In a game where ripping people’s heads off their shoulders is commonplace, a former soldier with PTSD would probably not measure too well against its cast.Negan – Tekken 7Speaking of TV icons, who in a thousand years would have guessed that Negan from The Walking Dead TV series would appear in Tekken? The story goes that Tekken’s lead producer, Katsuhiro Harada, was a big fan of the show and the character. One day he decided to ask AMC if they were fine with having Negan be a guest character in their game, expecting to get a polite refusal. Instead, they were completely on board with the idea and so we have one of the strangest crossovers in fighting games.Negan with his trusty barbed companion, Lucile. (Image from the Tekken Wiki)Darth Vader and Yoda – Soul Calibur 4To be fair, developers Bandai Namco are no strangers to odd guest characters in their fighting games. Since the beginning of fighting games with the birth of the Mortal Kombat series and the Street Fighter series, respectively. There has been a real struggle with those trying to create a new IP in this oversaturated market. To stand out in this genre, a game has to have a great roster of characters, a good narrative, a USP and also, be a mechanically sound fighting game. This can be tricky but one series that broke the mould was Soul Calibur and Soul Calibur 5 would be the 2012 iteration that would aim to continue this trend. This particular fighting game has made a name using a rock-paper-scissors type approach to combat and the fighting styles are all weapon-based. However, aside from these assets, the game plays very similar to titles such as Dead or Alive, Tekken, God Hand or Injustice: Gods Among Us.Accessible for NewbiesFighting games are one of those types of games where you either have the aptitude or you don’t. However, with the changes made in Soul Calibur 5, there is an entry point for newcomers that was perhaps missing from previous games in the series. This comes through the Critical Edge system which acts a focus meter or spirit level often seen in the Dragonball-Z or Street Fighter series.Combos and tactically positioning yourself can be tough, so this method allows you to fill the meter with hits inflicted and hits taken, so when the chips are down, you have a chance to spring into life and get yourself back into the fight. Plus the moves you can pull off with this are pretty sick into the bargain.Content is lackingOne thing that a fighting game needs along with great gameplay are a great story. VGA adapter and a high-definition TV or computer monitor. There is also some debate regarding the animation quality in the series. Some still contend that the original Soul Calibur actually has more natural character animations in comparison to somewhat choppy moves in the newer installments. As with the later sequels, the original Soul Calibur is filled to the brim with great fighting gameplay. Each of the game’s warriors is armed with a different deadly weapon and an assortment of special moves all tailored to that specific weapon. At first, the huge number of possible moves and combinations available for use can be a bit daunting, but it keeps you wanting to learn more. The main arcade racers you may remember are Outrun, Daytona USA, Hang-On, and Sega Rally Championship. However, there is one racer that never received much mainstream exposure, but still holds up as a high-quality racer.Instead of boasting a large car lineup like Gran Turismo or Sega GT, Sega’s F355 Challenge focuses on just one model of vehicle and tweaking it to perfection. Much like the Gran Turismo series, Sega paid great attention to detail to create an accurate representation of one of Ferrari’s most treasured cars. It is now an expectation of any game series within the genre. Soul Calibur 5 fails to deliver in this department sadly. The storyline consists of a handful of cut scenes but mostly storyboards to push the story forward which, in 2012, just screams lazy. Then the story itself is overdramatized, has a rather unlikeable protagonist, supporting characters that don’t fair much better and most importantly, youre locked to the protagonist, Patroklos for almost all the battles. Which is a shame considering that he has move sets that would bore you to tears they are so basic. Overall, its a terrible plot, with terrible characters with terrible voice acting.Looks the PartThe game does deliver on its past successes in the art department with visuals that raise the bar once again from the previous sequel. The environments are stunning, the character models are excellently designed with a new level of polish, the animations for each character are fluid and varied. Then into the bargain, you have the character creation system that makes a return from the previous iteration and ups the ante with more classy customisation options. The only issue is that the characters can’t have their own custom move sets but its still a very welcome mode to have.A beautiful let-downAs far as the gameplay goes, aside from more accessible assets for newbies, it’s very much more of the same. The graphics and animations are better than ever and the sound quality to fine also. Where the issue lies with Soul Calibur 5 is its lack of game modes and abysmal story. 6The characters introduced are weak, unlikable and not even fun to play as. All in all, it looks great but aside from that, we don’t see any other reason to stop playing the fourth in the series in favour of.
