Soccer demands a unique level of fitness. In the sport you'll need endurance and stamina, but also strength and explosiveness. Being in "soccer shape" is much more than the traditional concepts of cardiovascular endurance and strength. Many players at the top level will play the full 90-minute match, only breaking at half time! "Soccer shape" encompasses a combination of skills that sets soccer players apart from athletes in many other sports. At Techne, we design our training programs to contribute to the mastery of total soccer fitness. You can find all of the following covered in the App:‍1. EnduranceExceptional cardiovascular endurance is the core of "soccer shape". Soccer players cover vast distances during a match, constantly sprinting, jogging, and even walking. The ability to maintain a high level of this intensity throughout the 90 minutes, with the possibility of extra time, is crucial. Long-distance running forms the foundation, but interval training and high-intensity sprints are equally vital to simulate the unpredictable nature of the game. In the App this is covered in Physical Training, there's always a running session that is soccer specific including sprints, bounding, and interval training. Players can also increase their endurance while working on technical skills by using the 1-minute timer on dribbling drills and pushing the pace to maximum intensity. Taking ample breaks and maintaining quality while fatigued will build your endurance.2. Agility and Quick ReflexesSoccer is a sport in which split-second decisions can determine the outcome. Being in soccer shape requires agility and quick reflexes to navigate through defenders, evade tackles, and react swiftly to changes in the game's dynamics. Drills focusing on lateral movement, change of direction, and reaction time are integral to achieving and maintaining this aspect of fitness. The Weekly Dribbling Sessions in the Techne App offer a variety of drills and progressions for players to work through and improve agility.3. Strength and PowerContrary to the misconception that soccer players don't need strength, being in soccer shape demands a level of strength and power. Players must be able to hold off opponents, win aerial duels, and execute powerful shots. Strength training, particularly focusing on the lower body, core, and upper body for stability, is a crucial component. Great soccer workouts will focus on the types of exercises you need to build strength and power.4. Skill MasterySoccer shape is not only about physical prowess; it's about mastering the technical skills that define the sport. Ball control, dribbling, passing accuracy, and shooting precision are skills that need to be honed continuously. Practicing these skills under various conditions, such as fatigue and pressure, is vital to ensure that a player remains effective in any situation. The Weekly Juggling, Dribbling, and Wall Work progressions in. Long gone are the days when college soccer players spend all summer lifting weights and running but don’t see a soccer ball. Now, it’s expected that players are staying sharp technically, whether through playing on a team, in pickup games, or by training with the ball on their own. While many college programs have always offered detailed strength training programs and specific fitness standards during the offseason, many now also provide guidance in terms of what technical skills players should work on, both general and/or position-specific.Over the past few years, more than 120 college programs have been offering access to the Techne app for their players to stay sharp in the offseason. From highly-competitive Division I schools to small Division III programs, we work with coaches and players who value meaningful improvement and ongoing development.Quality Time With The Ball“At the level of the ACC and Division I soccer our players are expected to use 4-6 hours a week with the ball on a weekly basis. This is in addition to any summer training or games they may have with their respective WPSL teams, etc.,” says Randy Waldrum, head coach of the University of Pittsburgh women’s soccer team. “Some of this 4-6 hours of expectation may be with the app, and some is working on pieces of their game that they need to improve upon. Most of our players are playing in the summer and training with their summer team, so this 4-6 would be in addition to that.”There are many college coaches who set more minimal standards for training, but across the board, coaches cite consistency and quality as key. Technical work, when attended to consistently, doesn’t need to be hugely time or energy-consuming for busy student athletes. Coach Vanessa Martinez Lagunas of the University of Manitoba expects her players to spend at least 30 minutes weekly using Techne as their guide.Similarly, UT Dallas coach Kanute Drugan expects his players to invest a minimum of 30 minutes per week with the Techne app. After they concluded this most recent season undefeated in their conference, Drugan explains, “This 30-minute investment is on their own time. We directed the girls to focus on academics but encouraged them to maintain Techne as much as possible.” Creating IdeasMany top college players are already very adept at training on their own and have training routines they’ve followed for years. For these players, Techne can be
