Mood themes" below the "preview all mood themes" link. If you have a paid account or above you can create a new mood theme and edit, delete, or switch between your mood themes. You'll also need a hosting service where you have your mood icons uploaded. To create a mood theme, you enter the theme's name and click create. You can then fill in your icons for each mood using the custom mood theme editor, consisting of each icon's url, width, and height. You can change or add icons to an existing custom mood theme by clicking "edit" next to your custom mood themes. Editing custom mood themes using the administration console The GUI mood theme edit screen is all very well and good if you're willing to tab through the text boxes for 132 moods to set the url, width, and height of each. It's easier if your icons are the default 100px by 100px, but if not you have a whoooole lot of typing ahead of you. It's useful for, say, changing a few icons in a pre-installed theme, but for installing a mood theme from scratch I found it more trouble than it's worth. Evidently this problem was even more acute in LiveJournal, which Dreamwidth is code-forked from, because the editor was very teperamental and frequently crashed the browser. Here's where we come to arcane knowledge from the LiveJournal days: You can also set mood theme icons through text commands in the administration console without going through the GUI screen. This works pretty much like a computer terminal screen, where you enter text commands and run them. Even more conveniently for this particular purpose, the commands here don't have to be line by line--you can enter a bunch of command lines, say, 132 of them, and then click "Execute" to run them all at once. As far as I know there is no menu item leading to the admin console. You can follow this link to access it. Just feel that forbidden energy! Don't worry too much about messing things up. As the instructions helpfully note, some commands are only executable by site admins so there's little chance you could break something site-wide. Setting custom mood theme icons is definitely a thing you can do at user level, and it doesn't hurt anything. I just personally find it more convenient than using the GUI screen, and you might too.Step-by-step instructions for setting a mood theme from the consoleFirst, you need to create your custom mood theme so you have a theme to modify and populate with icons. This post is an adapted excerpt from the blog of Amplitude, a Priceonomics customer.A lot of early web developers did not mess around much with analytics tools. The mid to late 90’s saw the rise of the extreme-amateur web developer: X-Files fans who filled pages with photos of every moment of visible romantic tension between Scully and Mulder; teenagers with livejournal accounts about being teenagers with livejournal accounts; retired conspiracy theorists. It wasn’t so much that these developers weren’t ready for web analytics as it was that web analytics wasn’t ready for them: most solutions to monitor site traffic were expensive, complicated, or both. For the most part, amateurs were OK with this. Their pages were relatively simple, and their traffic relatively low, so they weren’t too worried about monitoring performance. And, back then, analytics was mostly thought of as a tool to track bugs and prevent server failure. However, this did leave these amateur web developers with one, obvious, burning question: How many people are looking at my website?Enter the hit counter: basically the bluntest web analytics solution ever provided.Hit counters purported to display how many people had visited a site since the hit counter was placed on the site. They usually were image files vaguely resembling odometers. Hit counters were about as hackable, breakable, and ugly as they were easy to install. But don’t be too hard on them: they set the stage for present day web analytics. Server Log SoftwareThe earliest state of the art analytics solutions depended on reading and analyzing the server log. Every time someone views your web page, their browser makes an HTTP — hypertext transfer protocol — request for every file on your page, to the server each file is hosted on. A record of each request is kept in the server log.Server log records keep track of many useful things: the person’s IP address, a timestamp of the request, the status of the request (whether it was successful, timed out, etc.), the number of bytes transferred, and the referring url — the page the window displayed before making a request for your file.Breakdown of a fictional line of server log: [123.123.123.123 – – [26/Apr/2000:00:23:48 -0400] “GET /pics/wpaper.gif HTTP/1.0” 200 6248 “ “Mozilla/4.05 (Macintosh; I; PPC)”] via jasoftEarly analytics solutions were programs that took every entry in the server log and helped you interpret them. And it’s a pretty good system, because there tends to be a minimum of two, up to twenty, thirty owners. Once you work on a code base for a while, someone just adds you to owners. I think it’s a great system.Fitzpatrick: Nothing with Google is really a deadline. With Google it’s like, “What do you think about launching this? How does that feel?” It’s rare that there’s some real deadline. Most of them, we think it’d be nice to launch on this date and so everyone tries really hard. But you’re only letting down other people that want to see it launch by that day if you don’t finish something. And most of the things I work on are very “When it’s done, it’s done.” Seibel: When you were hiring programmers at LiveJournal, did you manage them? Fitzpatrick: Well, I kind of assumed that none of them would need managing; that they would just all be self-driven like me. That was a learning experience in HR, that some people just do what they’re told and don’t really have a passion for excellence.Seibel: Do you have favorite interview questions? Fitzpatrick: One of the ones I’ve given a few times because it was on my AP programming test is given two decimal numbers as a strings of arbitrary length, multiply them. There are a lot of different ways that they could do it. If they’re really good at math—like I’m not—they can find some clever ways to do it really efficiently. Worst case, they can make a class that does just addition repeatedly. I tell them from the beginning, “Don’t stress out. You don’t have to do it efficiently. Just get it done somehow.” Some people stress out and have no clue where to begin. That’s kind of a bad sign. The worst case, you just implement the algorithm you do in grade school.Seibel: Or does that only work if you have some natural inclination that way?Seibel: Google has a bit of a reputation, as Microsoft also does, of interviewers using puzzle questions.Fitzpatrick: One question was, imagine you have a bunch of computers on a switch and they turn on the whole rack; come up with an algorithm so every machine on the rack knows the status of all the other ones about whether they’re on or off. So basically a presence thing. That was pretty much the constraint. Basically, they. Sign in to your MUO account Start using the best instant messaging client out there for Mac. It's called Adium, it connects to everything and there's no reason for not using it. Okay, there's one reason - Adium does not support Facetime. But if that's not an issue for you, Adium is a piece of software you should install. Combine all of your conversations into one great interface, then customize that interface to work exactly the way you want it to. We've somehow managed to run a technology website this long without reviewing Adium. It's insanity, but it ends now - here's a rundown of reasons you should be using this program. It Supports Everything Let's begin by pointing out the main advantage of Adium over iChat/Messages - it supports everything. Whereas Apple's default chat client supports AIM, Yahoo and Jabber, Adium comes with built-in support for a long list of clients: XMPP ("Jabber"), a protocol used for: Google Talk LJ (LiveJournal) Talk Facebook Chat Gizmo5 MSN Messenger (soon to stop existing, replaced with Skype) AOL Instant Messenger (AIM), which is used for: MobileMe (formerly known as .Mac) Yahoo! Messenger, including Yahoo! Japan Messenger ICQ Bonjour (compatible with iChat) Twitter IRC MySpaceIM Gadu-Gadu IBM Lotus Sametime Novell GroupWise You'll note that Skype is not included in this list. You can install an Adium extension for Skype, but you'll need Skype running in order to use it. Still, if you're looking to combine all of your chats into one program, it works well. Beautiful Interface But support for almost every chat platform out there isn't all Adium offers. This program is basically beautiful. Everything works the way you'd expect. The main window includes everyone online from all of your added services (I've blurred everyone to protect their identities) : Click anyone to start chatting. You can combine duplicates (the same person logged into two services) by dragging one entry into another. Do you not want to open a window? You can also quickly start a conversation from the system tray; all of your contacts are listed in the drop-down menu. And when you open a window you'll see a clean, tabbed interface for chatting: As you can see, there's not a lot of wasted space, especially if you use the proper theme. But if you like wasted space that's possible too - there are many ways to customize Adium. Customizable But wait...there's more. Head to AdiumXtras and you can browse tweaks for Adium to make it better. Here are a few highlights for me: See links to images as embedded images. Perfect if you, like me, use pictures of animals to communicate. Chat without leaving a game's fullscreen mode Chat with

Moodmill, and Hictu.”A couple of months later, another RWW writer (Josh Catone) profiled Soup.io. This app was clearly inspired by Tumblr, but seemed to offer more “lifestreaming” features. Lifestreaming was yet another term for social media back in Web 2.0. Many old-school bloggers will fondly remember FriendFeed from that time — although I’m jumping ahead slightly, as that wasn’t released (in a private beta) until October 2007. In any case, lifestreaming meant aggregating your various internet feeds in one place. Josh nicely described how Soup did it circa September 2007:“One of Soup's killer features is the ability to import outside activity streams. You can import your activity from Digg, Flickr, del.icio.us, eBay, LiveJournal, StumbleUpon, Twitter, Vox, YouTube, Zooomer, and even Tumblr. Soup can also read from any RSS feed meaning you can import your activity from just about anywhere. Posts are automatically created on your Soup when new activity comes in from your feeds on other services. Those posts are marked with icons marking which service the information came from.”2008: From FriendFeed to Soup.ioIt was the activity streams feature that most attracted me to Soup, since I had accounts on multiple web services and I wanted to aggregate them on one webpage. To briefly define an “activity stream,” it is a list (or feed) of activities from a single web app or site. So, all your Flickr photos, for example.I think I first began looking into Soup in early 2008. So, you might ask, if I was mainly interested in activity streams, then why didn’t I just continue to use FriendFeed instead of starting a Soup? After all, FriendFeed was more popular amongst bloggers at this time. The answer is that FriendFeed was too geeky. On FriendFeed, I not only aggregated the fun stuff (like last.fm for music, AllConsuming for tv/movies, and Goodreads for books), but also my RWW posts, what I “dugg” on Digg (a popular tech news aggregator), my LinkedIn updates, my tweets, and much more. FriendFeed was a comprehensive feed of everything I used on the internet, for both work and play. Everyone else seemed to use it in the same manner, too — you just threw the whole kitchen sink in there. My FriendFeed, circa September 2008; via Wayback MachineWhat I wanted for a tumblelog, however, was something that represented the non-geek me. A place to aggregate my cultural interests, rather than my tech work.Tumblr was enticing, because. A place to aggregate my cultural interests, rather than my tech work.Tumblr was enticing, because

Oh goodie, goth mimes. The best of both worlds. They pretend they're trapped in a box and then whine about how cruel and unfair it is.My LiveJournal Comment ICN Member Join Date: Oct 2004 Posts: 665 For some strange reason I do ok with chocolate, if you're not in a huge flare you might want to try it just to see how your bladder tolerates it. I like eating milkyways but I do great with Cadbury chocolates (they don't bother my IC) that can be found in the foreign food sections of some grocery stores or at British/European import stores. I also love eating the ferrero rocher candies that have coconut on the outside and almonds and vanilla cream on the inside.... Licorice is a good option too.... I can also eat regular mento's without prelief and the fruity kind with prelief. I really miss eating sour patch kids, fuzzy peaches, and other sour candy and I doubt I will ever find an equivalent that I'll be able to eat. Some British/European chocolates you may want to try (if you can't find it in your area, it is available at alot of online stores, and alot of these candy bars are also found in Canada)Cadbury:Crunchie (Golden honeycomb centre in Cadbury dairy milk chocolate)Mr. BigTime OutLunch BarSmarties (European version of M&Ms.... less bothersome to my IC)RosesPeppermint CrispNestle:Aero Mint (delicious white mint chocolate)Milky Bar (my all time favorite white chocolate candy bar....tastes delicious and not like any white chocolate found in the US)Milky Bar Smarties (almost like white chocolate M&Ms yummmm)Frys
