A weapon never before seen live, on screen, in the saga.It is the most identifiable weapon of Star Wars : the lightsaber has been a dream come true for viewers for half a century. And yet, it has often evolved over the course of films, series and other spin-off novels. Like when Darth Maul arrived with his double saber in The Phantom Menace (in 1999). They are then the prerogative of female Sith Lords, like Githany or the Dark Lady of the Sith, Lumiya, who faces Luke Skywalker in the comics. The weapon evolves into a whip lightsaber in the 2021 novel The High Republic: A Test of Courageby Justina Ireland, which tells the story of the youth of Vernestra Rwoh, then a young Jedi Knight, who tinkers with her saber so that it can turn into a laser whip if necessary. The technical workings of this whip are briefly revealed in the 96th issue of the comics. Star Wars. Lumiya explains to Nagai Den Siva that a lightsaber works on the same principles as a. He is repeating his song at the typical pace. But is this what the song actually sounds like? Most of our field guides note nuances that the phrase “whip-poor-will” misses. Of special note is that the middle syllable often sounds like two syllables. To Sibley, it’s “Whip puwiw WEEW.” To Pieplow, “whip-po-wa-will.” Even Thoreau, who didn’t have the benefit of audio recordings of the species, thought this, once naming the bird “Whip-or-I-will” in his journal. The hidden note in Whip-poor-willAnd there’s something else hidden in the song of the Eastern Whip-poor-will: a quiet (to our ears, at least) introductory “cluck.”You need to be close to a Whip-poor-will to hear the introductory note. And you need to know what you’re listening for, because the cluck is quick and easy to mistake for the background noise of frogs, insects, and other unseen night beings. In Missouri, I was lucky enough to stand close enough to a singing Whip-poor-will to hear this sound. It’s hard to hear in recordings, but it’s there. Here’s the best of my recordings. Between repetitions of the bird’s three syllable song, you can hear the gulp-like cluck.I’ll admit to finding the classic song of the Whip-poor-will as eerie and weird as many 19th century writers found it. Perhaps I was primed for that experience, being familiar with both the longstanding lore and the horror fiction invoking the species.Even so, there’s something ominous about a forest filling with this rhythmic chorus. This is especially so when distant birds answer one who is nearby. It felt threatening, as if the nearest bird is calling a veritable army of the night into existence. No wonder the worry and fear and lore we once projected onto Whip-poor-wills: the darkness once closed in on us with a demand to whip Will.Yes, this is just a flight

From wildlife scientists with the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, I traveled to the Ozarks of southern Missouri to spend the May full moon where Whip-poor-wills still sing.Under a Full Moon with a Lunarphilic SpeciesOne of the most important things to know about Whip-poor-wills is that they’re lunarphilic. This means that they sync much of their behavior – feeding, reproduction, migration, and, yes, their song — to the moon cycle.Full moons are especially important. They provide good light for Whip-poor-wills to hunt flying insects. And they draw out great choruses of birds. So it wasn’t by accident that I brought myself to Missouri for the May full moon. I didn’t just want to hear Whip-poor-wills, I wanted to hear them under the light that seems to define their existence.Whip-poor-wills feed and sing more vigorously under a full moon. Photo in Fremont, MO. The night didn’t disappoint. Though weather seemed to gloom the sky by day – and a few early evenings brought rain – the evenings cleared of clouds. The waxing moon shown on the woods, its moths, mammals, and its many (so, so many!) Whip-poor-wills.As the moon intensified, so, too, did the song of Eastern Whip-poor-wills. They seemed to sing from everywhere: the trees closing in on the bunkhouse I stayed in, woods beyond those trees, even modest thickets on roadsides. Here is a video (which is really just an audio recording) of one of those modest thickets singing the night away.A thicket whip-poor-wills in southern Missouri. The Classic Chant of the Eastern Whip-poor-willWhen most people think of the song of a Whip-poor-will, they think of the three syllable, chant-like call heard in the video above: a discrete “whip” followed by the joint “poor-WILL,” with sharp emphasis on that third syllable. This is what a single, close bird sounds like, especially if

Eastern Whip-poor-wills fill late spring and early summer nights with the sound of their song: a repetitive, rhythmic, chant-like call of “whip-poorwill.” Among America’s birds, this may be one of the best-known vocalizations. Certainly, it’s the most iconic. After all, what other bird has inspired centuries of poets, novelists, and songwriters to listen in wonder at the darkness? But as with most things we think we know about other species, the story is more complex—and certainly more interesting—than it seems. Sure, Whip-poor-wills sound like they say their name. But as the recordings I’ve included below show, there are other sounds in there, if you’re close enough to a singing bird and know what to listen for.Where Whip-poor-wills Still SingUntil the week of the most recent full moon, my experiences with Eastern Whip-poor-wills (Antrostomus vociferus) were rather limited. I didn’t grow up with their chant echoing through the woods behind my home in the Hudson Valley of New York, though I those who lived there a generation or two before me probably knew the song well.Instead, I heard Whip-poor-wills during return trips to New York to bird the area with a high school friend and my youngest brother. (I now live in Colorado, where Common Poorwills are and Whip-poor-wills aren’t.) These encounters were brief and distant, as I describe in my recent essay for Audubon. It was hard to hear in them what had made the song of Eastern Whip-poor-wills so iconic: its endless repetition, its echoing quality as birds answered each other, and the wildness of their calls under a full moon. This spring, I decided I had to hear the birds again, so I can do the songs justice in the book I’m writing on the species. I wanted to know what made the icons an icon. So, with an invitation

Summary Lightsabers come in various shapes and forms, including the newly introduced live-action lightsaber whip in The Acolyte. These whips are an evolution of the traditional lightsaber, boasting malleability but a slightly weaker energy stream. Vernestra Rwoh wields the lightsaber whip, drawing parallels to Mace Windu, adding a unique element to Star Wars lore. The Acolyte, the next Star Wars Disney+ TV show, will feature the first ever live-action lightsaber whip - but what is this weapon, and how does it work? Although most viewers are familiar with only the standard blade, in reality there are many different types of lightsabers - and some are visually far more impressive than the normal weapon used by Jedi and Sith. Who can forget the first trailer for Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace, which featured Darth Maul igniting his double-bladed lightsaber for the first time? The Acolyte will push the boundaries even further, though, featuring the debut of the first ever live-action lightsaber whip. This is already proving divisive on social media, with some thrilled and others criticizing the idea. Here's all you need to know about the lightsaber whip, including both how it works and its 39-year history in Star Wars lore. How A Lightsaber Whip Works Most viewers assume a lightsaber is simply a laser sword - a term George Lucas tried to avoid - but they're actually quite sophisticated. To understand a lightsaber whip, it's first necessary to understand how a lightsaber works in the first place, because a lightsaber whip is basically a modification of the standard design. The so-called "blade" of a lightsaber is actually a stream of superheated plasma, its blade shape controlled by a magnetic field generator. This is explained in Star Wars: Lightsabers - A Guide To Weapons Of The Force: "Once the energy is focused, it leaves the handle from a positively charged energy lens inside the blade emitter. The beam is trapped inside an energy field created by a kyber crystal, which bends the beam back towards a negatively charged high-energy flux aperture in the emitter. The lightsaber whip is simply a development of this idea - a longer, weaker and more malleable magnetic field, meaning the plasma stream can be manipulated like a whip. The Acolyte's lightsaber whip is wielded by Jedi Master Vernestra Rwoh (played by Rebecca Henderson), and she's installed a switch on her lightsaber that allows her to transform her traditional blade into a whip whenever she wishes. This gives her a uniquely malleable weapon, although the energy stream is more diffuse - meaning it's a little weaker than a standard lightsaber blade. Vernestra Rwoh A prodigy among the Jedi of the High Republic, Vernestra "Vern" Rwoh was one of the youngest Jedi ever to achieve the rank of Knight. She served at a time of crisis for the Republic, battling on the front lines against the Nihil, the Nameless, and the Drengir, and proving herself wise beyond her years. Vern will appear in live-action in. If you don't look like you should You've got to whip it, whip it, whip it good Like prison, ladies, no escape Til you're whipped into shape! Whip it! Whip it! Whipped into shape Whip it! Whip it!

The ocean is full of uncharted territory—and of breathtaking natural wonders that look as though they might hail from another planet. Underwater plants and sea life are teeming with color and fascinating features like tentacles, bioluminescence, jelly-like skin, and ornamental shells. Aquatic scenes can look as dark and celestial as the night sky or as bright and kaleidoscopic as a flower garden. From sea anemones to sun coral, these 10 stunning underwater organisms offer an ethereal beauty hard to reproduce on land. White-Plumed Anemone Brent Durand / Getty Images There are more than 1,200 species of sea anemone in the ocean and these creatures are responsible for some of the most stunning colors and shapes you'll find underwater. The white-plumed anemone is among the most captivating of anemone species because of its odd cauliflower floret-esque appearance. This columnal plant can grow as tall as three feet and thrives in cold water from Alaska to San Diego. And while the soft pouf at the top looks like a nice place for a fish nap, those tentacles are the anemone's primary tool for stinging and catching prey. Red Sea Whip Giordano Cipriani / Getty Images The red sea whip is what you might expect a crimson-headed cartoon character's hair to look like if upside down. This soft coral belongs to the order Alcyonacea and the family Ellisellidae. Soft corals don't have the calcium carbonate skeletons found in hard corals, so their malleable tentacles dance with the water. Each branch of the sea whip contains countless coral polyps (small tubes fringed with tentacles) that gather food. Located primarily in shallow waters in the tropics and subtropics, the red sea whip coral is found across the world. Like the red whip, other corals of the Ellisellidae family are usually brightly colored and they come in different shapes. Green Sea Anemone Mark Newman / Getty Images This vibrant green sea anemone bears a strong resemblance to the land-based Anastasia flower, a type of spider chrysanthemum. Most of the anemone’s color occurs because of the symbiotic relationship it has with the photosynthetic organisms that live in
